Bruce, a ten month old Belgian Malinois/Shepherd Mix, has joined OffLeash SoCal for our Two Week Board and Train program. Bruce went through our Basic Obedience Lessons in the past, so he knows all his commands. Bruce’s owners are having issues with him being reactive towards other dogs, being distracted out in public, and will bark and jump that the front door at people outside or guests coming over. Over the two weeks Bruce will be working on his off leash obedience and manners. Check in to see his progress!

Bruce is settling in well at my home. He got to meet the rest of my pack. He did very well meeting the other dogs. Bruce is having a great time with his new friends and exploring his new surroundings. Tomorrow we will begin his training and see what he remembers from his lessons.

Today Bruce and I went to the park to work on his obedience. We did a little run through of all his commands to see where he is at with his training. Bruce did pretty well. Heel is what we worked on most today. He tends to walk ahead and puts his nose to the ground a lot, instead of paying attention to where I am walking. After a short period of working on heel, Bruce slowed his paced and watched where I was going. We came across two little dogs today. Bruce didn’t show any reactivity towards them. He just observed as they walked by us.

Today Bruce and I went to Lowe’s to train out of the heat and work around distractions. He did very well inside the store. We worked on all his commands and practiced his duration. Bruce heeled nicely at my side as we passed by people. The only thing that distracted him was the big Halloween monsters that were on display.

Today Bruce and I went to the shopping outlet to work on his obedience around more distractions. He was a little distracted when we first arrived, but as we walked around and trained he was able to settle down and focus. He did a great job following all his commands. He walked nicely past people and other dogs we came across. We worked on his distance and duration. Bruce struggled a little with holding his commands as I tried to circle around him. He would try to get up and turn to see me. After some reps, Bruce realized I would come back around and he stayed in position. We will continue to practice and get better.

Today Bruce and I trained at home. We practiced all his commands and worked on his duration and distance. We practiced more of the ‘circles’ (me walking around him while he stays in a sit or down). Bruce did much better, staying in position and only moving his head to see where I am at. I used his friends as a distraction and let them play around us while we trained. Bruce did very well staying focused and ignoring his buddies, even though he really wanted to run around and play. Once training was over he got to join in on the fun.

Today Bruce and I went to the outdoor mall to work on his obedience around distractions. Once again, Bruce did a great job staying focused and following his commands. Bruce had many admirers that stopped and complimented him on his obedience. We came across a little dog that was barking and pulling towards Bruce. Bruce was a good boy. He ignored the dog and continued with his training.

Today Bruce and I trained at home. We practiced all his commands and worked on his duration. We also worked on his food manners. For food manners Bruce must sit or lay patiently for his meal. He is not allowed to eat the food until given permission. Just because the food is on the floor, does not mean it belongs to him. We worked on his door manners as well, teaching him to not pass thresholds until given permission.

Today Bruce and I went to the park to work on his commands and have some fun. We worked on all his commands, but mostly on his distance recall. Bruce had a blast running around and exploring, enjoying his off leash freedom. Even with another off leash dog at the park, Bruce listened my command and came back to me when called him from a distance.

Today Bruce took the day off from training and spent the day playing and socializing with his friends before he goes home tomorrow. I gave him a bath so he can be clean when he sees you, but he wrestled around with his buddies getting dirty again. I am very proud of Bruce and the progress he has made over these two weeks. He can’t wait to go home and show you everything he has learned!
