Pupdates:

Nala, a seven month old Belgian Malinois, has joined Offleash SoCal for our two week board and program. Nala comes to us knowing some commands but not always following them, not walking properly on leash, being anxious and distracted out in public, and being reactive towards people and dogs. Over the two weeks, Nala will be working on her off leash obedience and manners. Check in to see her progress!

Nala is getting settled in at my home. I am slowly introducing her to my pack. She was timid around them, but wasn’t reactive. She wasn’t interested in playing, but able to socialize and be around them. I know she will warm up to them once she gets adjusted to her new surroundings.

Happy Easter! Today Nala and I trained at home. I introduced and conditioned her to the ecollar. We practiced commands Sit and Place. She did very well and caught on to her new command quickly. We need some more work on her duration, but with more practice she will be able to hold her commands longer. Nala came out of her shell today and showed interest in playing with the rest of the dogs. She loved running around as the other dogs chased her.

Today Nala and I went to the park to train. We practiced more of her sit and heel commands. We also worked on to new commands, Down and Heel. Heel is still a work in progress but she is walking much better now, staying close to my side and focusing on me and where I am going. We had a little struggle with Down. It is not her favorite command to do, but we will keep practicing.

Today Nala and I went to Lowe’s to work on her obedience around distractions. She was a bit distracted when we first arrived, but as we walked around and trained she was able to settle down and focus on her commands. We practiced a new command, Come to Sit. She caught on quickly to her new commands. She did very well around people distractions. We met with another OffLeash SoCal trainers and his dog so Nala could practice around a dog distraction. She was unsure of the new dog, but wasn’t reactive. Nala got to meet a few of the Lowe’s employees. She sat nicely and patiently while she received pets and attention.

Today Nala and I went to the park to work on her obedience. We practiced all her commands and worked on her duration. We worked around another dog distraction. Remy was distracted in the beginning. She would whine and break command. As we continued to practice around the other dog, Remy was able to settle down and focus back on her commands.

Today Nala and I went to the promenade to work on her obedience. There was a lot of commotion going on around us which made it a little difficult for Nala to focus. As we walked around and trained she settled down and was able to focus on her commands. She received many compliments, from people, on her good behavior. There were a few people that wanted to pet her, but could see Nala was very unsure of them so I politely declined. I allowed them to talk to her and praise her which made Nala more comfortable. We met with other OffLeash SoCal trainers so she could train around other dogs. Nala did very well around all the other dogs, she ignored them and stayed focused on her commands.

Today Nala and I went to the outdoor mall to work on her obedience around more distractions. She did very well. She was focused and obedient. We were able to train semi-off leash today! I let her drag the leash around while we worked. We need to tighten up a few of her commands and she will be ready to start working completely off leash.

Today Nala and her buddy, Remy, went back to Santa Monica to work on their obedience around distractions. We trained on the pier. Nala was a bit distracted with all the crowds and commotion, but as we walked around and trained she was able to settle down and focus. She had many admirers that stopped to watch her train. She got a little startled by a person that tried to come up to pet her. She tried to nip and back away from the person. I think the gentleman just came too quickly to her which made Nala uncomfortable. There were a few other people that came up to pet her. I allowed Nala to approach and sniff them first, and once she was comfortable I allowed them to pet her.

Today Nala and I went to the park to work on her obedience. We practiced all her commands semi off leash and worked on her distance and duration. We met with other OffLeash SoCal trainers and their dogs so Nala could train around other dog distractions. She did very well and stayed focused on her commands. The only struggle we had was having people approach Nala to be pet. I tried to have one of the trainers come up to Nala to pet her. I allowed Nala to sniff him first before he reached out to pet. She did fine coming up to greet him, but once he tried to pet her, she backed up and shied away. We will continue to practice and get her comfortable around new people.

Today Nala and I trained at home. We practiced all her commands and worked on her distance and duration. I used her friends as a distraction and let them play around us while we trained. This was a little difficult for her at first. She wanted to join her buddies in playtime. As we continued to practice, she eventually ignored them and was able to focus on her commands. After training Nala got to join on the fun.

Today Nala and I went down to the beach to work on her obedience around distractions. She did very well working completely off leash! Nala was focused and obedient. She did very well around all the people distractions. The only issues we had were with other dogs. She wasn’t reactive, but tried to avoid them when we would pass by. She would try to move to the right side of me or walk behind me if walked closely to another dog. Continuing to expose and introduce Nala to other dogs, will help build her confidence around them and make her more desensitized.

Today Nala took the day off from training and spent her last day playing and socializing with his friends before she goes home tomorrow. I am very proud of her and the progress she has made. Nala can’t wait to go home and show you everything she has learned!
