Emma the Saint Bernard from Pasadena, CA went through the Balanced Canine Training SoCal 1 week Board & Train dog training program. Emma was trained by dog trainer Sheena Chavez in La Habra, CA.
Emma is a 7 month old Saint Bernard who has joined us for our 1 week Board and Train program. This “pup” is very big and strong for her age and she is extremely sweet. Unfortunately, her many fears get in the way of showing off her kind heart. Emma finds comfort in her home with her mom and sister. She doesn’t like getting in or out of the car including the car rides themselves. As well as going out for walks, she just turns right around to go back home. Check below to see her progress.

First day of training and Emma is learning "Come & Sit". When you call her to come you want her to come towards your right so she can loop behind you to sit directly on your left hand side. This helps her recall when you call her name and of course your basic sit command as well. But, Emma is not allowed to break her sitting position until you tell her "Break!", this will go for all commands. You can see Emma is very slow and lazy moving, so we want to encourage her to pick up her pace just a bit.

“Belly rubs please!” - Emma
When we take a break from working Emma loves to roll over and receive lots of belly rubs/scratches.

Here we have Emma working on her "place" command. Place can be used for her to get up onto a dog bed, blanket etc. Just like with any other command she has to hold her position on the designated place object until she hears "Break!". She is very nervous when being introduced to new things so we are still working on building her confidence.

Emma is building up her courage and now making her way in and out of cars! It is much easier than having to carry and lift her dead weight, overall struggling. The commands we are using to get her into cars is "Place" and the normal release command "Break!".
You can see at 1:06 into the video we begin to practice with a different car that is higher off the ground. Sometimes she gets discouraged but it is important to keep trying till she can get it down to end on a positive note. Also, at 3:20 you can see Emma holding and practicing her "extended sit" for almost 1 whole minute!
