Maximus, a four month old Shepherd Mix, has joined OffLeash SoCal for our Three Week Puppy Board and Train Program. Maximus comes to us with typical puppy behavior: having little knowledge of commands, jumping to greet, pulling on the leash while walking, not being potty trained, etc. Over the three weeks Maximus will be working on his on leash obedience and manners. Check in to see his progress!

Maximus is settling in well and has made himself right at home. He got to meet the rest of the pack. He has been having a blast running around and playing with all his new friends! The only thing he is not too happy about is being in the crate.

Today Maximus and I went to the park to work on his commands. We worked on his Sit and Down commands. We also practiced Place and Heel. Place is a command where Maximus must sit or lay on a defined object. This command is great for by confidence as well as teaching him to be relaxed and calm. Heel is a structured walk where Maximus must walk nicely at my side. The leash should be loose and he should be paying attention where in walking at all times. Maximus did pretty well and caught on quickly to his new commands. We met with other OffLeash SoCal trainers and their dogs, so Maximus got to practice around other dog distractions. He was a little distracted in the beginning, but as we continued to work on his commands he was able to settle down and focus on his training.

Today Maximus and I went to the park to work on his commands. We practiced all his commands. We started working on his duration, having Maximus hold his commands longer. It is still a work in progress, but he is improving. I am able to move around and distance myself while he stays put. Maximus is doing very well with his heel command, staying right at my side and focusing on where I am going. While we were at the park, Maximus got to see a horse. He did very well staying calm and holding his place command as he watched it pass by. No potty accidents today.

Today Maximus and I trained at home. We practiced all his commands and worked on his duration. I introduced him to the potty bells. We worked on the touch command, getting Maximus to touch the bell with his nose. We still need some more practice, but he is a quick learner and caught on to his new command. Once he gets a better understanding of the bells, I will start incorporating the door to go outside.

Today Maximus and I trained at home. We practiced all his commands and worked on his distance and duration. I used his friends as a distraction and let them play around us as we worked. A little distracted in the beginning, wanting to join in on the fun, but as we continued to train Maximus was able to focus on his command. We also worked on his food and door manners. For food manners, Maximus must wait patiently for his food. Just because the bowl is on the floor does not mean it belongs to him. For door manners, Maximus is not allowed to pass thresholds until given permission.
