Kona | Boxer/Shepherd Mix Dog Training | Long Beach, CA

Kona, a Shepherd Mix from Los Angeles, CA went through the Balanced Canine Training SoCal Board and Train dog training program . Kona was trained by Amanda Lascari in La Habra Heights, CA.

Teddy came to Balanced Canine Training SoCal with varying behavioral issues, including pulling on the leash, squirrel chasing, jumping up when greeting, counter surfing, generally not listening to commands, and barking at strangers. Balanced Canine Training SoCal was successful in transforming Teddy into a well-managed pup.

Kona, a one year old Boxer/Shepherd mix, has joined OffLeash SoCal for our Two Week Board and Train Program. Kona comes us knowing some commands, but not always following them, pulling on the leash while walking, jumping to greet people, chewing, digging, overly excited and reactive when seeing people and dogs, being easily distracted out in public, and playing to rough with the children and other dogs. Over the two weeks Kona will be working on his off leash obedience and manners. Check in to see his progress!

Kona is settling in well at my home. I introduced him to the pack. He did very well meeting everyone and is having a blast running around and playing. I am going to let him get adjusted to his new surroundings today and tomorrow we will begin training. Above is a tutorial video for the ecollar. I didn’t get to send you home with one, but please watch this video as many times as you need so you can become familiar with the training collar.

Today Kona and I trained at home. I introduced and conditioned him to the ecollar. We practiced commands Sit, Down, and Place. Place is a command where Kona must sit or lay on a defined object. This command is great for building confidence, working on duration, and teaching Kona to be calm and relaxed. He caught on quickly to his new command. Kona did great on his first day of training!

Today Kona and I went to the park to work on his commands. We practiced more of his Sit, Down, and Place commands. We also practiced his Heel command. Heel is a structured walk. Kona is not allowed to put his nose to the ground to sniff, focus on people or other dogs. The leash should always have slack (leash should look like the letter J). Kona did really well. He walked right at my side and focused on where I was going.

Today Kona and I went back to the park to work on his commands. We practiced more of his Sit, Down, Heel, and Place commands. We started working on his Come to Sit command. This is where Kona will come around my right side and sit on my left in the heel position. This command can be a little tricky, but Kona is starting to get the hang of it.

Today Kona and I went to Lowe’s to train out of the heat and work around distractions. He was a little nervous with the new surroundings, but as we walked around and trained he was able to relax and focus. We practiced all his commands and worked on his duration. He is still getting the hang of Come to Sit. He gets a little confused and will try to sit on my right or behind me. We will continue to work on this. Kona received a few compliments from customers on how well behaved he is.

Today Kona and I went to the park to work on his obedience. He did a great job following his commands. We even trained semi-off leash. I let him drag the leash around while we worked. We came across another dog while we were training. Kona was a good boy and  didn’t try to run over to the dog. He held his down position as it walked by us. We need to tighten up a few of his commands and then he will be ready to start working completely off leash.

Today Kona and I trained at home. We practiced all his commands and worked on his distance and duration. I used his buddies as a distraction and let them socialize as we trained. Kona did a great job and stayed focused. Once training was over he got to join in on the fun.

Today Kona and I went to the park to work on his commands. We met with other Offleash SoCal trainers and their dogs, so Kona could practice around more dog distractions. Kona did very well. We were able to train semi-off leash around them. He ignored the other dogs as stayed focused on his commands.

Today Kona and I went to the mall to work on his obedience around distractions. Kona worked completely off leash! We practiced all his commands and worked on his duration. He did very well with all the people distractions. We had quite a few people that gave Kona compliments on how well behaved he is. We need a little more practice with his come to sit, but other than that, Kona did a great job!

Today Kona joined me on a little shopping spree at the he outdoor mall. We practiced all his commands off leash and worked on his distance and duration. Once again, Kona did an amazing job! He stayed focused and followed all his commands. He did much better with his come to sit today.

Today Kona and I trained at home. We worked on his food and door manners. For food manners, Kona must wait patiently until given permission to eat. Just because the food is on the floor does not mean it belongs to him. This will help him develop self-control and discipline. It can also help prevent behavioral issues that can arise, such as begging, food guarding, and stealing. For door manners, Kona must wait at thresholds until given permission to pass. This teaches Kona impulse control, creates calmness before going for a walk, and ensures safety to not bolt through the door.

Today Kona and I went to Lowe’s to train out of the heat and work on his off leash obedience around distractions. Kona did a great job inside the store. He was focused and obedient. We came across another dog inside the store. Kona did very well staying in command and ignoring the dog as it passed by us. He received compliments and some pets from the employees. He sat nicely and patiently while receiving all the love and attention.

Today Kona took the day off from training and spent the day relaxing and socializing with his friends before he goes home. Kona has done an amazing job with his training. I am very proud of him and the progress he has made over these two weeks! Kona can’t wait to go home tomorrow and show you everything he has learned!
