Newfoundland Dog Training | Lady Marmalade | San Diego, CA

Lady Marmalade, a Newfoundland from San Diego, CA went through the Balanced Canine Training SoCal Board and Train dog training program . Lady Marmalade was trained by Amanda Lascari in La Habra Heights, CA.

Lady Marmalade came to Balanced Canine Training SoCal with varying behavioral issues, including pulling on the leash, squirrel chasing, jumping up when greeting, counter surfing, generally not listening to commands, and barking at strangers. Balanced Canine Training SoCal was successful in transforming Lady Marmalade into a well-managed pup.

Lady Marmalade, a one year old Newfoundland, has joined OffLeash SoCal for our Two Week Board and Train program. She comes to us knowing some commands but not always following them. Her owners are struggling with Lady Marmalade pulling on walks, being easily distracted out in public, being overexcited when seeing dogs and people, jumping to greet, and not completely potty trained. Over the two weeks Lady Marmalade will be working towards her off leash obedience and manners. Check in to see her progress!

Lady Marmalade is settling in well at my home. She got to meet the entire pack. She did pretty greeting everyone. She was calm and respectful towards everyone. I am letting her get adjusted to her new surroundings today. Tomorrow we will begin her training. Above is a video tutorial for the Ecollar. I didn’t get to send you home with one, but please watch this video as many times as you need to become familiar with the training collar.

Today Lady Marmalade and I trained at home. I introduced and conditioned her to the Ecollar. We practiced commands Sit and Place. Place is a command where Lady Marmalade must sit or lay on a defined object. This command is great for confidence building, working in duration, and teaching her to be calm and relaxed. Lady Marmalade did very well and caught on to her new command quickly. We need some more work on her duration, but that will come overtime with more practice. She did great for her first day of training! No potty accidents.

Today Lady Marmalade and I trained at home again.  We practiced more of her Sit and Place commands. We started working on the Down command. We need some more practice with this command. She does really well when I lure her with a treat, but if I take the treat away and ask her to down Lady just looks at me. We will continue to practice and improve. No potty accidents today.

Today Lady Marmalade and I went to the park to work on her commands. We practiced more of her Sit, Down, and Place commands. She did much better with Down today. We started working on the Heel command. Heel is a structured walk. Lady Marmalade must walk at my left side. She is not allowed to lead, lag behind, put her nose to the ground, or focus on distractions around us. It is still a work in progress but Lady Marmalade is walking much better, staying closer to my side instead of trying to drag me around.

Today Lady Marmalade and I went to Santa Monica pier to work on her obedience around distractions. I was surprised how well she did. I thought she would be very distracted and excitable with all the people, but she was calm and listened well to all her commands. We met with other Offleash SoCal trainers and their dogs, so Lady could work around more dog distractions. She greeted the dogs nicely and calmly. She had a lot of admirers on the pier that watched her train. Lady received many compliments on how beautiful and well mannered she is. Greeting people was a little hard for her though. Lady tried her best to sit nicely and patiently while being pet, but couldn’t resist trying to get up and jump to say hi. We will continue to work on her greeting manners, but overall Lady Marmalade is a great job for her first training around high distractions.

Today Lady Marmalade and I went to an outdoor mall to work on her obedience around more distractions. She was a little distracted when we first arrived, but  as we walked around and trained she was able to settle down and focus. She did a great job heeling at my side. She was a little stubborn with her down command. You can see in the video she was being silly and wanting to roll around on her back. I made sure that she followed through and completed the Down command correctly. Lady Marmalade had many admirers that wanted to give her affection, but I let them know that she was in training and learning how to be neutral/calm around people distractions versus getting excited and jumping at every person she meets. No potty accidents today.

Today Lady Marmalade and I trained at home today. We practiced all her commands and worked on her duration and distance. I used her friends as a distraction and let them be around us while we trained. Lady Marmalade was a good girl, ignoring her buddies and staying focused on her commands. We practiced her Heel command using weaving poles. She tends to try and walk a little too far away from me. The poles help with tight turns and getting her to stay closer to my side. We need to tighten a few of her commands and then she will be ready to train semi-off leash.

Today Lady Marmalade and I trained at Lowe’s to work on her obedience around distractions. She did very well. Lady was focused and obedient. We were even able to do some semi-off leash training; letting her drag the leash around while we worked! Lady did great holding her commands as people passed by us. She received a compliment from a customer. He told Lady she was doing a great job and was very impressed how well mannered she is. No potty accidents.

Today Lady Marmalade and I went to the park to work on her commands. We met with other OffLeash SoCal trainers and their dogs, so lady could work around more dog distractions. At first, Lady was a little distracted by the other dogs, wanting to run up and say hello to them, but I made sure she stayed focused and followed her commands. After some repetition she was able to ignore them and focus on her training. We were able to work semi-off leash around the other dogs. We practiced all her commands and worked on her distance and duration. We need to tighten up a few of her commands, then she will be ready to start working completely off leash.

Today Lady Marmalade and I went to the park to work on her commands. There were low distractions today, which was good so Lady could be more focused. We practiced all her commands completely off leash! She did a pretty good job. We need some more work on her heel, still trying to walk a little ahead of me. Overall, not bad for her first time completely off leash!

Today Lady Marmalade joined me on a little shopping spree at the mall. The mall was pretty busy so she had many people distractions to work around. Lady did a great job! She worked completely off leash. We met with another Offleash SoCal trainer and his dog, so lady was able to work around dog distractions. Lady was focused and obedient. She received some compliments from people that stopped and admired her training.

Today Lady Marmalade and trained at home we practiced all her commands and worked on her duration. We also worked on her food manners. For food manners, Lady must wait patiently to receive her food.

The benefits of food manners is:

-Impulse control-Waiting for food helps your dog learn patience

-Reducing Anxiety and possessiveness- Good food manners can help reduce your dog's excitement, anxiety, or possessiveness around food.

-Not eating things she’s not supposed to- good food manners will teach her not to grab and eat things off the floor. Just because there is food on the floor does not mean it belongs to her.

Today Lady Marmalade and did some training at home. We practiced all her commands and worked on her food and door manners. She spent the rest of the day playing and socializing with her friends before she goes home tomorrow. She got a bath so she can be nice and clean when she sees you. I am very proud of Lady and the progress she has made over the two weeks! She can’t wait to go home and show you everything she has learned!

Today Louie and I went to the park to work on his obedience. He did really well. We were able to practice semi-off leash. I let him drag the leash around while we trained. We need to tighten up a few of his commands and then he will be ready to start working  completely off leash. Today was his first time showing interest in the other dogs, wanting to play. He ran around and chased the other dogs. Good improvement with socialization.
