Winnie | Great Dane | Long Beach, CA

Winnie, a Great Dane from Los Angeles, CA went through the Balanced Canine Training SoCal Board and Train Program. Winnie was trained by Amanda Lascari in La Habra Heights, CA.

Pupdates:

Winnie, a three month old Great Dane, has joined OffLeash SoCal for our Three Week Puppy Board and Train Program. Winnie comes to us with typical puppy behavior: little knowledge of commands, being easily distracted, pulling on the leash while walking, not potty trained, and picking up/chewing things she’s not suppose to. Over the next three weeks Winnie will be working on her on leash obedience and manners. Check in to see her progress!

Winnie is settling in well at my home. She was a little shy at first, but warmed up to them quickly. She is having a blast running around and playing with them. I took her to a family party where she got to socialize with everyone. Everyone loved Winnie! She enjoyed getting all the love and attention.

Today Winnie and I went to the park to start working on her obedience commands. We practiced Sit and Place. She did very well and caught on quickly to her commands. We worked in short intervals because Winnie tires out pretty quickly. Winnie had one accident in the house, early in the morning. She went #1 and #2 in the kennel. I noticed her stool was pretty soft. i have added pumpkin to her meals to help settle her tummy. I will keep an eye on her and see how she’s feeling tomorrow.

Today Winnie and I stayed home to train. We practiced more of her Sit and Place commands. We started working on her Down command. Not sure if she already knows it,  but she caught on very quickly. Winnie has no problem laying down on the dog cot, but is a little stubborn when asked to lay down on the floor. The pumpkin seems to be helping Winnie’s tummy. Her stool isn’t fully back to normal, but is more solid.

Today Winnie and I went to Lowe’s to work out of the rain and train around distractions. We met with other OffLeash SoCal trainers and their dogs, so Winnie had many distractions to train around. She was very distracted with her surroundings, but as we trained she was able to focus and follow her commands. We started working on her heel command. It is still a work in progress, but she is walking much better. Winnie had an accident in the house today. She wasn’t a fan of rain and decided to go potty in the rain.

Today Winnie and I went to the mall to work on her obedience around more distractions. It was very busy, so Winnie had many people distractions to work around. She was a little overwhelmed with all the commotion which made it hard for her to focus. After walking around for a while, she was able to settle down and focus on her commands. She received many compliments on how sweet and adorable she is. The floor was too slick for Winnie to stay in a sit, so stayed patiently in a down command while a few people pet and gave her affection.

Today Winnie and I went to the mall again to work on her obedience. She did better today; more focused and less worried about her surroundings. Winnie is getting better with her duration. She is able to hold her sits and downs a little bit longer. Today her stool looked backed to normal.

Pupdate 12/23/2023

Today Winnie and I trained at home. We worked on her duration. We also started working on a new command, Come to Sit. This command is where Winnie comes around my right side to my left and sits next to me in the heel position. This command is a little tricky, but Winnie is starting to get the hang of it.

She was a a very good girl and everyone loved her. She enjoyed getting all the love and attention. She was a little upset she didn’t have a gift to open up with all kids.

Merry Christmas! Today Winnie and I trained at home again. We worked on all her commands. We practiced her distance and duration. She is getting better at holding her commands. She is very good at staying focused on me while I move around, even with her furry friends around. Winnie was happy to have guests over for Christmas. She was even more excited that she got to make a new friend, Jax the Golden Retriever. They played and ran around nonstop. She was happy to open a Christmas gift.

She loves her little gingerbread man!

Today Winnie and I went to the park to work on her obedience. We met with other OffLeash SoCal trainers and their dogs, so she had dog distractions to work around. She was definitely interested in all the new dogs which made it hard for her to focus, but as we continued to train around them Winnie was able to ignore them and follow her commands. Now that Winnie understands all her commands, I switch her off the slip lead and introduced her to a new training collar, the prong collar. She is responding very well to her new training collar.

Today Winnie and I went to a local shopping center to work on her obedience. She did very well. She was focused and obedient. Winnie has a few admirers that watched her train. A couple people approached and asked to pet her. Winnie sat patiently while they gave her love and affection. We went into PetSmart where we came across some other animals. She was very interested in the parakeets that were flying around in their cage. We saw some guinea pigs. Winnie wasn’t sure about them first, but eventually walked up to the glass to get a better look at them.

Today Winnie and I went down to the beach to work on her obedience around distractions. Even though it was a little chilly, the beach was still packed with a lot of people, so Winnie had plenty of distractions to work around. She was a little overwhelmed at first, but as we walked around and worked on her commands, she was able to settle down and focus. She did great with all the people and dog distractions. Her favorite part of the day was getting to play around in the sand. Last night, before bedtime, Winnie was playing with her friends and got an owie. She got a little crazy with her zoomies, not paying attention to where she was running, and ran straight into the rosebushes. She got a few deep cuts on the side of her muzzle. I washed her wounds, put hydrogen peroxide, and ointment. I will keep an eye on it and continue to keep it clean. Her little boo-boo didn’t stop her. She was right back at it  with her zoomies and playing with her friends.

Today, Winnie and I stayed home to train. We practiced all her commands and worked on her distance and duration. I used her friends as a distraction and let them play around us while we trained. She was a little distracted at first, and wanted to join in on playtime, but I made sure she followed through with her commands. As we continue to practice, she was able to settle down, ignore her friends, and focus on her training. Once we were done, I let her join in on the fun.

Today, Winnie and I went to The Hollywood Walk of Fame to work on her commands around distractions. She was a little overwhelmed and distracted with all the commotion, when we first arrived, but as we walked around and trained she was able to settle down. Winnie did very well around all the people distractions. She a got a little startled by the big buses and traffic noise, but it didn’t take her long to get over the noise and be used to it. I am very proud of how well she did today!
